Weekend Book Review: Summer Classics

Reading is something I have always enjoyed, even as a child. In fact, there is a funny childhood story about a time when I had a friend over for a play date and was so engrossed with my current book that I sat on my bed reading while my friend played with my toys. Socially, I have become a bit more apt over the years [thank god!] but I laugh at my eight year old self in that story since I can still become that captivated by a good book.

Whether your weekend plans include a walk to the beach, hanging out by a pool, or even a quiet relaxing night at home, here are a few of my favorite summer reads that I can’t help but come back to each year.

Quite possibly the funniest series you’ll ever come across. It takes place right here in Jersey and each one in the series is better and more hysterical than the last – a rare thing for a series. I’ve gotten my entire extended family hooked on these books by now and the only complaint I ever heard: it’s embarrassing to read when you’re alone in a public place [beach, pool…] because you will laugh out loud. Often. The nineteenth book in the series was released a few weeks ago and I’m just as hooked now as I was years ago when I read the first one. While starting at the first one and continuing in order isn’t mandatory, I would at least read the first six or seven in order as many new and recurring characters are introduced. My personal series favorite: To The Nines. I read it every summer and every summer I reach a scene in the book where I am laughing the can’t-breathe-tears-pouring-down-my-face type of laugh. Which scene is it? You’ll have to just read to find out!

This book was originally bought for me when I entered middle school by a well-meaning family member and it’s a book I’ve gone back to read a number of times since. Luckily, the “birds and the bees” conversation happened early in my house so twelve-year-old me wasn’t shell-shocked by some of the content. Lesson learned, the words “Judy Blume” and “kids book” are not necessarily synonymous. Best part: It’s a long book, and will easily take up a number of full beach days reading it. Defining an entire week by one long book and a little bit of sunburn – to me, there’s nothing better.

I’ll start by saying that no, it does not count if you watched the movie. I’ve refused to see it since I’ve heard the ending is different and to me, the ending of this book was genius. It was a great book until the last page, where it became phenomenal. Be prepared to cry. I was warned about this and shrugged it off; I never cry at books. And I didn’t cry - until the very last page [where the use of the word cry to describe my actions would be the understatement of the century]. My Sister’s Keeper is, far and away, my favorite book of hers although Nineteen Minutes and Handle with Care are tied for a close second.

Enjoy the weekend - and happy reading!

To The Sea

I’m headed down to my family’s home on Long Beach Island for the weekend and it will be the first time I’ve been down there since Memorial Day Weekend. This summer is just flying by! My family’s 4th of July barbeque is this Saturday so I’m looking forward to relaxing days reading in the hammock and sunset boat cruises at night. And maybe a little “Witch’s Brew”, the special name given to my family’s red sangria. Here’s to a weekend filled with love, laughter and water sports.

Trending: Orange

Well, it seems as though the rest of the world has finally caught up to me in terms of the color orange. For years now I have been singing its praises. After all, it has the bright/colorful/fun qualities that we all love in pink …and yet it’s not pink. Something about pink just never clicked with me; perhaps it is the quintessential “girlish-ness” of the color. Either way, I’ve always found myself leaning more towards orange’s and yellow’s my whole adult life. [I say adult life because there was that one dress for my prom….but let’s not go there] And now it seems that orange has taken over – from hair accessories, to handbags, to toes, orange is everywhere I look lately. And all I can say is, finally.

Take a look below at some of my favorite orange things in my closet and on my shelves.

Slice of Heaven

Now that schools are out across the state, this week is the first week we’ve seen the influx of weekly renters. Many people I’ve grown up with hate this time of year – and understandably so; Traffic lights that have been blinking yellow for months are now turned back on, roads that used to be two directional are now one-way-only. And let’s not even discuss the traffic.

Mother of pearl, the traffic.

But secretly, I’ve always loved it. Yearly, it serves as a reminder of how beautiful a place I live in. People drive from all over to rent homes, and stay in hotels, and frequent my favorite restaurants and stores during their annual family vacation. Others choose to vacation in this little corner of the world that I call home. So to all you jersey shore locals, let’s remember to share our little slice of heaven, and try not to curse out those bright orange plates as they miss their third [!!] opportunity to enter the 34 circle [what is it about traversing a circle that's so difficult, anyway? Tips on navigating a traffic circle…that’ll be a post for another time] Because after all, those bright orange plates help support our uncle’s Italian restaurant on east Main Street, and our neighbor’s jewelry boutique on the corner of Bay Ave.

And anyway, biking is great exercise.

The Beginning

Although the summer season officially began five days ago, and my own personal summer vacation started two days later, today is the first day to officially feel like summer. It’s Monday, its seven thirty at night, and, despite an otherwise productive day of re-starting my running regime and catching up on DVR’d shows, I’m still wearing the same pajama’s I started the day in this morning [a day which began at 11am, thank you].  Ah, summer. Thanks for always coming back.

[I do not remember where this picture was originally taken, or who took it, but isn't it fabulous?]
